Easy Ways to Prevent Mold

Mold is something no one wants in their home. This fungi is beneficial in nature as it assists in decomposition. However it can be the opposite when found growing inside a residence, school, business or other building. There are different types of mold, some of which are quite dangerous to your health. Even the most benign types of mold can be very irritating to the sinuses, nasal passages, throat and lungs, and can cause asthma attacks in sufferers. Therefore it is important to prevent mold before it becomes a problem.

The number one method of preventing mold is to control moisture. Mold spores float around everywhere, both inside and out. While you cannot get rid of them, you may be able to catch some with an air purifier. However, even this will not get rid of them all. When mold spores find a moist location, they latch on and grow into mold. The most important thing you can do is keep your home dry. If you have damp rooms, open windows and dry them out. Fix all leaks you may have. One room mold is commonly found is the bathroom.

To prevent mold in your bathroom, dry the tub, walls of the shower and any other wet areas after bathing or showering. Another place mold can form is on wet clothing. If you wash clothes and forget about them, leaving them wet in your machine, they will grow mold. So make sure you promptly transfer washed clothing to the dryer or hang them to dry. There are special products made for the bathroom and other areas where mold is prevalent, use them on a regular basis to be proactive. If you run a humidifier in your home, turn it off if humidity is so high that you see condensation.

One of the most surprising ways to prevent mold is to keep the number of houseplants to a minimum. Although houseplants can be beneficial for air quality, moist soil can lead to mold issues. The worst place to keep plants is in your sleeping area. To keep bathrooms and kitchens dry, make use of your exhaust fans. If you have rooms of the home that are usually humid, run a dehumidifier which helps remove moisture from the air. As you can see, there are easy ways to keep mold from becoming a problem in your home.
